Although I understand being upset/embarrassed by creating something like [livejournal.com profile] johnxjohn and then having people take it seriously, I honestly think there's something "wrong" with stating that fanfiction/slash is embarrassing. Becuase it implies that there's something wrong with it and, you know what? I'm firmly in the category of "it's a hobby."

Hobbies I'm not ashamed of:

reading
writing
swimming
walking
bike riding
movies
masturbating
water color (when I do it)
gardening
going to Disneyland
collecting ... anything
going to coffee shops and haning out
writing/reading fanfiction
writing/reading slash

And nothing anyone ever says about why it should be embarrassing to write/read fanficiton/slash will ever convince me I should feel so.

You know what else I hate? When someone posts a rant about how not to write badfic or fic in general that says everything that people have said before and I only half-way agree with part of it .... and everyone praises them for "saying what needs to be said. Finally."

With you on this. Absolutely.

With the exception of spelling errors, which I think any good spell checker should catch, and grammar errors, which most good beta readers should catch, I think what goes down on the page should be determined by the person writing the story. One man's definition of a crap book is another man's bestseller, after all.

Sometimes, I think there's too much emphasis placed on rules for writers, and the really good authors are the ones who stomp all over those rules, and still produce a readable story at the end. IMHO, correct spelling and grammar are the two necessities. Almost everything else is gravy. :-)

I'm really tempted to write a "Ranting, 101" that mocks the "originality" of almost every single rant I've ever read. I mean, I get that sometimes you get fed up with things and want to let everyone know, but the fact that so many people treat each and every rant like Moses just came down with the 10 Commandments is insane.

I completely agree with you there. Everytime someoen makes a rule, five people break it and produce great work.

I think that was one of the worst "Screw you guys, I'm going home" posts I've ever seen.

It really was. And it's not like those things tend to be impressive in the first place. :)
