Is it a bad thing that I'm more and more wishing I'd never been born? I feel like our civilization is in decline and, pretty soon, probably within my lifetime, we're going to be living in some 1984/Handmaiden's Tale/every sci-fi/political book ever. And I don't want to live through that. I'd rather be dead or locked in a house, ignoring it all.

You know I made this icon a year ago or so when I first read Margret Adlers "Handmainden's Tale". It scared me. And it inspired me into even more dystopian novels. I think it's scares me and I persue it for the same reason. Because they're so realistic and because there's so much that seems only a step or two away from where we are standing right now.

Dystopian, that's the word I was loking for. And yea, they are frighteningly realistic and we seem to be getting so close. I'm just afraid I'm going to let it all overwhelm me and give up eventually.

Certain books got me almsot creeped out enough that i wanted to pull all my money out of the bank and put it under my bed. So no one could take my money, since certain ones made me truly understand that all my money is actually just a number in a computer.

And that a lot of things in life come down to numbers in a great computer. And what happens if someone specific can control that computer or could wipe out all computer reference everywhere suddenly.

It's rather creepy. I don't know what makes me do it, but I continue to read the dystopian novels almost like a sure gaurd against the idea of them. Or maybe just because it makes me a little less naive to the idea of the possiblity. though we have many, many fewer writers writing about it now than were in the eighties and nineties.

Try not to look too negatively at it, hun. There are still many, many good things about our world at present. Keep hope.

I feel the same way. I live with my grandfather and help take care of him. As soon as he dies, I've already decided to move to Canada. I hate my country.

You know, it's not even just the country, though. I was reading an article in reader's digest about these websites devoted to horrific violent stuff that's also true: the beheadings, footage of people getting shot/stabbed/murdred, committing suicide. I can't believe it's just Americans consuming or producing it and it makes me so sick and sad.
