and counting. Smallville!!!! Angel!!!! Lex!!!!!!!!

One note and a question:

1. I need caffine in the morning. Badly. I couldn't wake up this morning, right, and I was strangly tired all day only to come home and find out I drank decaf this morning because I'm an idiot. *bangs aching head on keyboard*

Question:

When you're getting an MRI, is there anything special you need to do beforehand? Fast, drink a funny drink, eat something special, etc? Or can you just go in and get scanned. (For a fic, obviously)

I just had an MRI a couple of months ago and I didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary (in fact, it was performed on a Sunday afternoon). The technicians always recommend to lower the caffeine intake for the day, but other than that, nothing.

I didn't have to do anything special beforehand either time I had an MRI. I did have to convince myself that I wouldn't die or worse from extreme claustrophobia and an inability to remain still while it was going on though.

Nothing special has to be done for an MRI, for a Cat Scan they might want that done with contrast media. That's when you either have to ingest, or be injected with, something like iodine. Also, for example, with a full body bone scan they would inject you with a radioactive isotope and wait about an hour to do the scan.

I don't really remember most of my MRIs, but I don't recall having to do anything out of the ordinary. I do think they injected me with something, and offered me a shot if I was going to have a hard time staying still. But, well. I usually fell asleep. *G*

Everything metallic must be removed from the patient's body, such as jewelry and piercings. The MRI cannot be performed on anyone with metal pins inside their bodies--ie. pins in hips, artificial joints, pacemakers, etc. About twenty years ago, a nurse told me stories of patients' fillings being pulled out by the force of the magnet. I don't know if it's still that intense, though, since that was back before they'd invented the so-called "open" MRI machines.

Also, children, epileptics, and people with anxiety disorders and/or severe claustrophobia are normally put under sedation for the procedure, since absolute stillness is required.

I really enjoy your Smallville fic, btw. Thanks for putting so much work into it--it shows. :)

Depends...

I believe it depends on the area they're scanning. If they're scanning around your stomach, you might have to fast, but nothing more.
