I'm going over the second draft of COTW 37 right now. So far, I've liked the way it's turned out. There are some problems at the beginnign, but nothing I can't fix.

And a survey I found in [livejournal.com profile] velvetglove's journal.

Survey for Slash Readers

How long have you been reading fan-fiction?
Four years, I think. Basically as long as long as I've had access to the internet, I've read fan fic.

How long have you been reading slash?
Two and a half years.

What type of stories to you prefer?
It depends on the fandom and how long I've been in it. I love first times and I like first time stories that have sequels. But I also like AU's, PWPs, plotty fics, angst, non-con ... Basically, if there's good characterization or something catches me, I'll read it. Except for torture fics.

Have you ever liked a writer (From list contact) but not their stories?
Yes, but usually I like a story but dislike the writer.

Why?
Sometimes people have a lot of good things to stay in essay form, or they're really nice and interesting, but their fic fails to grab my attention.

How do you feel about character bashing?

It annoys me. If someone is bashing a character, that character isn't really well characterized and therefore is not well written.

How do you feel about stories which grossly distort characters?

It depends on the fic. Sometimes, I'll shake my head at the characterization, but there's something about it that pulls me in. That's where I use the phrase, "It's just fanfic." Not because fanfic isn't important, but because sometimes it's an excuse for me to read about characters doing things that I will never see and would never
Have you ever stopped reading a particular writer's work because they either bashed a favorite character or grossly distorted them out of recognition?

Probably, but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

How do you feel about OC characters?

If they're well written, they're great. If not, they still add to overall story, so I'm okay with them.

How do you feel about Mary Sues?

They have their place. If kids get into writing because Fanfic.net gives them an outlet and they're all Mary Sue stories, great. But I'm not going to read the fic.

Have you ever stopped reading a particular writer's work because they put a Mary Sue in every story?

I think so.

How do you feel about writers who use stories as a soap box? (It only counts if you know they are doing it.)

I don't know if I've come across it. I suppose it would depend if they make me buy what they're selling.

Have you ever felt bashed by a piece of fictions? (Your religion, ethnicity political views, career choice?)

I don't think I have.

Have you ever unsubscribed from a list?

Many

Have you ever unsubscribed from a list due to character bashing?

No, but I've stopped participating on it.

Have you ever unsubscribed from a list due to the tone the stories started to take?

Sort of. I wanted dark, angsty fic, and everythign was fluffy and light. And somehow that was the most disturbing thing I'd ever read.

Do you send feedback?

Occasionally. I should send more.

Do you send feedback only when you like a story?

Yes. If I don't like a story, I stop reading it before it's done.

If you have stopped sending feedback, why?

I'm not reading in the fandom that I write in right now. I don't send much in the fandom I am reading in because a) I'm not on a list and b) it's hard for me to track down the e-mail.

Survey for Slash Writers:

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing seriously about nine years.

How long have you been writing slash?

Two and a half years.

Do you write anything other than fanfiction?

Yes. Original (if unfinished) novels and poetry

Do you use OC characters?

Many. If I feel a fic will benefit from them, I'll use them.

Have you ever Mary Sued?

Once in an Angel fic, but she played a very small part, and I don't think people realized she was a Mary Sue. And, if they did, they let it slide because the series was a humor series anyway, and everything was already ridiculous.

Have you ever adapted a story that had nothing to do with fanfiction, because fanfiction has a wider audience that your OC work would?

No, but I've tried to adapt a fanfic into an original story.

Have you ever written a story for reasons other than entertainment?

I don't understand the question. I write because I love to write, and I post because I like to share. If I didn't find writing entertainment, I wouldn't do it. Oh, except when my dad was going through his surgery, I wrote to sublimate.

What was your intention?

To find escape from what was going on. And to work out my feelings. Every time I visited my dad in the hospital, or something wrong, I went home and hurt Lindsey. It was very sad.

Do you like feedback?
Yes, yes, yes.

Do you like only positive feedback?

I'd love to get only positive feedback. Barring that, I'd love to get constructive and helpful feedback from a person who will understand if I attempt to explain what my views of what I was trying to do (if it's about the plot or choice I made for the characters).

Have you ever felt flamed?
Yes.

Was the criticism directed at you and your views or at the story (For example, characterization, plot, grammar?)
At me. They felt I character bashed and took out my anger at a character in a ridiculous plot line. The writer got a bit insulting towards me.

Have you ever stopped writing a story because of negative feedback?

No.

Have you ever unsubscribed from a list because of negative feedback?

No. I tend not to get on-list feedback.

Have you ever rewritten a story due to positive criticism?

Only from my betas. I might do it from someone else, but not on my Smallville fics (at least, not right now).

Do you have a beta?

Quite a few.

Is the story posted to the list, the first draft or the last draft of a work?

When I was in the Angel fandom, I posted WIPs because there was no automated posting interface and I knew I was almost done with the story. In Smallville, I post the finish draft of each part of the series.

Do you think you're a good writer?

Yes. But I could be great.
