The Dream:

Last night, I had a dream I stumbled across and alternative retelling of "Bridget Jones Diary", where it was told from Darcy's POV, only he was Hugh Grant's brother and just beaten cancer. Hugh Grant was still a sleaze, but his brother's biggest cheerleader and supporter. And I was baffled that the movie/book wasn't always told from that angle. And then, somehow I was in the story, only there was a lake and a bunch of weird animals (like platypuses and Loch Ness and otters) were in it and they wanted me to pet them because, you know. It was a dream. And dreams are weird.

Then, I started thinking, and my motto played in my head:

Keep it Gay

Which led to the Bunny:

A shy, reserved man (Grant?) with a playboy brother has just beaten cancer (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma?). The brother (Blake?) can be a sleaze, but he genuinely loves his brother. They are rich. I think their family business is music production, but while Blake is in the talent management side, Grant has always handled finances. He's not worked for several years while he's been ill. Now he's reentering the world, but finds his interest has waned. His mind drifts and he finds himself lost and dissatisfied. Meanwhile, Blake discovers "wild child" Sean at an open mic or open call or something. He starts grooming him to be a rock star, but their relationship quickly becomes unprofessional. The thing is, Blake completely misreads Sean, who, at heart, is sweet, naïve, and deeply romantic. Grant is at first repulsed by the façade Blake is forcing on Sean, but as he gets to know Sean better, begins to fall in love. The pivotal scene between the two of them is when Sean writes lyrics to a melody Grant composed and sings it to him while they sit side by side at the piano. Blake sees this and realizes that his "wild child" is really a "wildflower" and he needs to remarket. Because I haven't outlined it, I don't know if this scene goes in the middle or the ending quarter, so I'm not sure if Blake does the noble thing and steps aside or the asshole thing and tries to change so he can keep Sean.

Anyway. Back to my gay pirate novel.
