I saw the touring production today, with Diana DeGarmo as the Narrator and Ace Young as Joesph. I love this musical, I really do. I love the songs, I love the goofiness, I love the colors and the remix and the dancing. I know there will be no staged version that will ever live up to the one in my head, because I got into this play when I was hardcore into staging things (I still have my notes for JC Superstar somewhere) and I have almost everything about this play mapped out to the last detail. (Except Those Canaan Days, which I can't stand listening to, because it's boring).
So, yeah, I had a lot of fun at the play.
But, after Go, Go Joseph (the first act finale), I almost asked for my money back.
Look, I know it's a touring company. I know I saw a Sunday matinee on closing day. But if your cast (especially the female members, who sole purpose in the show is to dance) can't stay on rhythm (and are consistently off beat and out of sync with each other) and the choreography is so basic that it's basically a beginning exercise routine, then something is wrong.
But, on the other hand, Paul Castree as Simeon was so, so good. He sold the fuck out of Those Canaan Days. All the brothers were good, but he stood out (and not just because he was a pretty redhead. No, really).
The best news, though, is that one the way home, I stopped at Barnes and Noble to see if they had the album. And the did! The version I prefer above all! (Michael Damien as Joseph, in case anyone cares). So now I can go back to watching the play in my head (while I drive).
10 more days of school.
