Part 1
Part 2

A bell split the air loudly. Startled from his slumber, Sam jerked, whipping his head up. Immediately, he was reminded why moving was a Very Bad Idea. His head throbbed in protest of the movement. For some reason, his throat decided to get in on the action, too. And his tongue was stuck to the roof of his mouth. Which tasted horrible.

This was hell.

"I hate you, Gene," he groaned. He reached over and grabbed the kitchen timer. Resisting the urge to slam it against the nightstand, he instead made it stop ringing and threw it on the mattress next to him.

"Don't see why you hate me, you stupid, fucking, Goddamn poofy fairy," Gene growled back at him. "It's your fault we're in this mess, you nonce."

Sam gulped water from the glass next to the bed. "If I can tell you that's five less insults than last hour, can we just sleep? Stop this waking up every hour nonsense?"

"As tempting as that sounds, Dorothy, I don't fancy you getting nuttier than you already are. The doc said I was to wake you up every hour until at least six or your brains might shrivel up and fall out your arse."

He rolled his eyes. "Did not."

"Well, he warned of something happening. Details aren't really my strength. That's more the gay-boy science my nancy DI loves so much." Gene pulled a cigarette out from somewhere and lit up.

"Could you not?"

"My house, you div, my rules."

"One short."

"Git."

"And now we've reached ten. Can I go back to sleep now?" Sam rubbed his eyes. Rolled his head from side to side, hearing bones crack as his brain rolled around his skull.

Gene waved his hand. "Go right ahead, Princess. Don't mean to disturb your beauty rest. God knows you need it."

He sighed. Rolling onto his side, away from Gene--and why the man insisted they sleep in the same bed, he didn't know--Sam closed his eyes again.

"Reset the timer, Tyler. You nonce."

"I hate you." Sam did as he was told, then, after plumping his pillow, settled back down. The bed was actually comfortable--more than his own back in his flat, at any rate. And the sheets were clean; he'd changed them for the last fresh ones in the linen closet the night before. If not for the smoke drifting up his nose and the ache in his head, not to mention the having to be roused every hour, it would be a pleasant break being here.

No test card girl, either, even though she didn't come by as much anymore. Sam figured that actually choosing to be here rather than being trapped took some of the wind from her mocking.

And now he was mixing metaphors. Or something.

Warm waves of sleep lapped at his senses. The bed creaked softly under him as Gene shifted, and it felt as if he were falling. Not in a frightening way, but gently wafting through thick, heavy air that cradled him, rocked him, guided him slowly and easily back to the comfortable oblivion he'd been in moments before. Back to...

"So what ever happened between you and Flash Knickers, anyway?"

Gene's voice broke over him like a douse of cold water. Sam's eyes flew open and he started into the darkness, tense. Anger crawled along his back.

"What happened to you wife?"

A finger sharply flicked his ear, causing Sam to grit his teeth. "I asked you first."

"Yes, but of the two of us, who's more likely to give an answer?" He wasn't sure what that meant, but it sounded good.

Silence.

Sam closed his eyes again and settled more firmly into his pillow.

"She met another bloke."

His eyes opened. Sam pushed himself into a sitting position. "She what?"

"You deaf now, too, Tyler?"

"But... I..."

"Every the picture of eloquence, eh?" Gene scowl at his cigarette. "Some wanker she met at the shops. Started having tea with him. He promised he'd show her the world, then whisked her off."

"That's terrible."

"Gets worse." Gene laughed bitterly. "She was going to wait and tell me face to face. But I wasn't home." He shook his head. "She waited a week and finally gave up. Left me a letter."

Sam gaped. "A letter? That bitch."

Gene smacked him across the face with the back of his hand. "Watch your mouth."

"But Guv, a letter. That's cold. She should have..."

"What? Waited around indefinitely for me?" He turned his eyes on Sam. They were flat. Dull. "She's right. I'm never here for her. Haven't been for a long time. I'm at work or the pub or with you. She deserves more."

Sam swallowed. He couldn't keep eye contact. Instead, he looked down at his hands and wished that he smoked so he'd at least have something to do with his hands. "Maybe... maybe you just didn't have something worth going home to," he said quietly. "It takes two to break a marriage." Not that he'd know personally, and in the case of his own parents, the two were Vic and himself and not his mother. But still.

Gene let out a long stream of smoke. Gazed off into the darkened room. "Maybe you're right. We married young. Fire fizzled out long ago. Maybe..." He stopped talking. Ground out his cigarette. "So. Your turn."

He shrugged. "It just didn't work."

Silence. Then, "I pour my bleeding heart out to you, and all you give me is, 'it didn't work?'" He flicked Sam's nose.

"Stop it!" Irritated, he smacked Gene's hand away. "What more do you want me to say? It didn't work. End of story."

"She not good in bed?"

He opened his mouth. Closed it. "I'm not... she's fine."

"You're not good in bed."

"I'm fine in bed. Better than fine."

"Just not with her."

"Our problems weren't in the bedroom." He rubbed his forehead, not quite believing he was having this conversation.

"So. What then?"

He sighed and this time rubbed his eyes. "Ever... built something up in your head until you've imagined every bit of it. How it's going to be and feel and all that? Every aspect and particular and then... then you're there and you're trying to live up to something that you've already imagined to be perfect. And the reality just isn't... Well. It's reality." He dropped his hands and looked at Gene. "And reality isn't what you wanted, is it?"

Gene looked at him for a long moment. Then he snorted. "You're such a little girl."

"Oh, sod off." He flopped back onto the bed and turned his back to Gene.

"It's the same thing, though, wasn't it? As my missus. She wanted all of you, and you could only give her the part that wasn't already given to work."

Work, Sam agreed silently. And Gene. "She didn't appreciate not being a priority," he admitted. "And I wasn't willing to make her one."

There was a flick of metal, then the sharp sting of flint in the air. A moment later, he heard Gene exhale. Smelled the smoke. "Maybe settling down with one bird just isn't for guys like us."

"Flitting from bird to bird isn't for me, though." He sighed. "There's got to be a compromise somewhere. Another choice."

Gene snorted. "You find one, Sammy-boy, you run and tell me."

"Yeah," Sam agreed wryly. "Sure thing, Guv. Sure thing."

And why the man insisted they sleep in the same bed, he didn't know.

I actually did lol at this one, and my mum came over to see what the matter was...I made some excuse. Good job with the UST. x

Thank you. I love UST and the buildup. I'm trying to draw it out, not too much, but just enough until they explode. :)

Thank you.

So many good lines here :D

The doc said I was to wake you up every hour until at least six or your brains might shrivel up and fall out your arse. Gene would definitely say this :D

I loved the banter between them, and the fact that they were sharing a bed ;) Gene would have justified it by saying that as he needed to wake Sam every hour, this was the least inconvenient way. (Btw, are you aware that in part 2 you said he had to be woken every two hours?)

A great read :)

Exactly. It was the least inconvenient way. He was right there. Nice and snuggly warm next to Sammy. :)

Oops. I'll have to fix that. Thanks.

I'm loving this story. I get a thrill every time I see a new chapter pop up.

I love how protective Gene is being of Sam even while spewing insults every five seconds. I also love cranky Sam. It is so easy when writing him to tip over into whining but your Sam stays on the right side of that line.

Thank you very much. I can't wait for the next installment.

He's confused. All these warm, fuzzy, naughty feelings springing up towards Sam, and Gene is dealing with them the only way he knows. :)

Thank you.

I'm loving this, so pleased to see this up today. I thought there were going to be admissions in this section...

I'm at work or the pub or with you.
Work, Sam agreed silently. And Gene.

I hope they get together soon, so they have each other safe when Morgan starts doing whatever you have in mind for him...

They're still pretty much clueless right now. They're not putting their feelings into words yet. Or thoughts.

More soon. Thank you. :)

Love the two of them reluctantly talking about Gene's wife and then Annie. Plus Sam's description of why it didn't work out was very well expressed - shows him now living a real life rather than a fantasy version.

Just great.

Because I'm perverse, I like the part where Sam calls the missus a bitch and Gene slaps him. That is such a Gene/Sam thing. Even when Sam agrees with him, he's wrong.
Of course there is the 'no-one can bad mout up my wife but me' thing :)

That's one of my favorite parts, too. Sam may be rushing to defend his man, but his man won't take smack talk about his wife. Even if she deserves it.

And I just like Gene smacking him around. :)

Thank you.

Great chapter - I love the timer, and Gene and Sam's sniping at each other is just perfectly done! Also, Gene's defense of the missus to Sam was spot-on for his character, and shows us so much insight into how he's feeling over the whole situation. Can't wait to read more!

I have the distinct feeling that I might be able to think of a compromise for our lads.
Great story, I can't wait to see you finish it!
