Michael, LLI, and Prison Break fic
Sep. 8th, 2006 09:22 pmOne thing I've noticed with Prison Break fic is the way that people write about Michael's "low latent inhibition". Now, I don't actually own a copy of the DSM-IV, so maybe low latent inhibition *is* an actual mental illness. But from what research I've done on it (mostly for LLAR2), it's more of a... thing that people have. From there, depending on certain factors, it can either aversely affect them (like in schizophrenics) or help increase creativity (in people who are highly intelligent). In regards to Prison Break, I don't think it's really hindering Michael, the ability to process things completely and see how they're breaking down. What aspect of LLI sent him into therapy was the fact with, coupled with is abandonment issues and low to no self-worth, he began processing the suffering of others and taking on those burdens. Not that he'd walk into a room and get overwhelmed with everything he saw; in fact, Michael seems to have a way to cope with the stimulation already in place. It's the people aspect, where he's so in tune with their needs, he sets aside his own.
What I'm noticing in fic is that people are writing Michael as a very high functioning Asperger's (or at least my understanding of the disorder). For example, in the fic I"m reading now (which I am highly enjoying), Michael (who is an AU Michael, as this is a completely different Michael) fits this to a T: They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see., which I got off a sight about Asperger's.
I'm just... it's not that I'm not enjoying the fics, or don't like the portrayle, it just bothers me, for some reason, that the LLI in and of itself seems to be treated as a disease or disorder in the parts of fandom and fic I've encountered (which, IMO, was brought on by sloppy writing on the show's part) instead of realizing it was the consequences of being so "gifted" that was the problem, not the gift itself.
