Lex takes a pregnancy test and discovers he's pregnant. The AI says that the baby is healthy, but underweight and Lex must try to get over 200 pounds and soon. Lex proves to be resourceful at getting what he wants while pregnant, including Damien, a pregnancy book, and Clark's full and undevided attention. Jason, Damien and Dominic's five year old son finds out that Lex is pregnant and is estatic. Damien is not. Dominic is bemused. Mabel is rehired to work as a cook for Lex to help him gain weight. Jason Tegue and Grant bump into Clark and Lex at the bookstore. Jason, having heard the Kents are movign to the city with the Luthor-Kents, is worried Lex might be sick. Grant believes they might be adopting a child. Lex tells them they have to wait until the party on Sunday.

"Anyway, it's so sad," Lois said, her breathing obviously heavy over the phone. "Every time I've seen him this week, he's always eating. Nonstop. And Clark only encourages it. And such fatty, calorie heavy food, too! Chloe, it's sad!"

"And so you feel that, because Lex is suddenly gaining weight, you have to lose?" Chloe asked amused. She sat back in her chair and stretched her neck. She'd been working for three hours straight. Lois's call had proven a nice interruption.

"Hey," Lois said, sounding hurt. "I've always kept in shape, you know that. This is nothing more than my daily routine."

"Uh-huh. Has Clark said anything about Lex's sudden eating habits? I mean, you know what a picky eater that boy is."

"Nothing. Smallville is being annoyingly tight lipped about this. Every time I mention his stupid husband, he just... beams at me, like he's trying to remind me that he has someone, and I'm still single and unable to attract anything. God, Chloe, would it have killed you to tell me that he was Superman? I made a fool of myself over him."

Chloe rolled her eyes. "You're still not over that?"

"Never."

Whatever. Lois could rival Lana in her need to hang onto the past. So, she'd had a major crush on Superman when he'd first appeared on the scene. And, yeah, Clark had, admittedly, had fun with it, but he'd felt it served Lois right for the hell she'd put him through before. Chloe didn't blame him. And if Lois was too short sighted to see what was in front of her, that was her problem. No one else who'd been close to Clark had been fooled for a second. Only Lois Lane.

"So," Chloe said, bringing the conversation back to the topic at hand. "Clark doesn't seem upset at all."

"No. He keeps humming."

"Huh." She brought a pen to her mouth and chewed on it. "He say anything about the party this Sunday?"

"No. Only to behave. Like I wouldn't."

Chloe ignored Lois's commentary. "Lana said that Jason ran into Clark and Lex at the bookstore the other day."

"Oh, I bet Clark's going to get in trouble with Grant. He has that new biography on Morgan Edge on his desk. Wasn't there that whole thing between the three of them?" Lois asked.

"Yeah, a long time ago. Personally, I think Grant should just get over it."

Lois sniffed. "I guess some people find getting over Smallville harder than others."

She rolled her eyes. "Uh huh. Unlike getting over Superman."

"You want to say that to my face?"

"Not really, thanks. It was just an observation," she replied with a sweet smile that was, of course, wasted on the empty space in front of her desk. "Jason mentioned that Lex seemed to bed gaining weight, too. He was shocked that Lex was eating in a bookstore."

"See? He's slipping. He's finally cracked and gotten over his anorexia."

"He's not anorexic. Just picky."

"Oh, come on…"

"You're just jealous that he has a better figure than you do," Chloe interrupted. She tugged on her hair. "Jason was running off the theory that Lex might be sick. Well, Lex or Clark, but everyone knows that it's more likely that Lex got sick. What do you think?"

The whirring of Lois's exercise machine stopped. She panted a few seconds before answering, "He doesn't look sick. In fact, he looks great, if you want to know the truth. Healthy. Besides gaining weight, he's getting some color. He doesn't look so much like a pale popsicle stick anymore."

"What do you think about the latest theory to run the mill that the boys are going to adopt a kid?"

"Haven't heard that one."

"Grant came up with it. It fits, doesn't it? Parents moving in, a party, presumably to make some announcement, all the secrecy. Clark say anything?"

"No, he hasn't. But that makes even less sense than Lex dying. He isn't even finished with his doctorate. Why would they adopt now?"

She shook her head. "I don't know. It's just a theory. And…" Suddenly, something clicked in her head. "Oh, *fuck*," Chloe swore, bolting upright.

"What?"

"I'll call you later. Bye." Chloe hung up and spat the pen out. "Oh, wow, Clark, how could you." She grabbed her keys and purse from their place on the floor. Pulled out her cell phone and dialed Lana.

"Hello, you have reached Lana Lang's voicemail," Lana's oh-so cheery voice proclaimed. "Please leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible." The phone beeped.

"Hey, hon, it's me. I'm heading over to the boy's. As soon as you're free, can you meet me there? I think Lex is going to need you. Love you." She snapped her phone shut and closed the door behind her.

Midday Metropolis traffic was as bad as the traffic in any other city Chloe had been too over the years. Except maybe Gotham. That city was special in all ways. The traffic was gifted. It sought you out, read your mind, and then clogged the streets and all the streets around you, trapping you in, making everything, even the coffee shop three blocks away, an hour's drive. At least.

But that's what you got when your city's savior was a repressed millionaire who dressed like a bat, had a sidekick named Robin, and thought that hanging upside-down was foreplay.

That had been the most uncomfortable date in Chloe's life.

As a rule, Chloe didn't wear high heels at work. Of course, as a rule, she generally worked at home, so she didn't wear much by ways of footwear or work clothes. The life of a freelance journalist had its perks. Exotic locations, digging through messes of lies and deceit to expose the truth, getting to work with her favorite photojournalist every once in awhile, and, best of all, not having to be tied up in the sticky mess Clark made when he'd come out as Superman on her beat.

Thank God Grant had suggested she try going freelance. Now, she got to work for all the major newspapers and magazines, writing stories that really mattered. And, she didn't have to worry about Superman.

Traffic was at a standstill. Luckily, Chloe had given up her car for the city and opted for a moped. She was able to zip through traffic and cut corners, getting to Clark and Lex's apartment in a reasonable amount of time.

They lived on the top floor. Not quite a penthouse, but close enough. The most important thing was the roof access for Clark. Someone had once seen him jumping out a window and freaked, thinking they'd seen a suicide. The roof was safer, especially since this building was the tallest in the neighborhood to hide from prying eyes.

Mabel opened the door.

"Oh. Hi!" Chloe said, trying to hide her surprise. "Wow, I didn't know… I didn't realize…"

"Chloe, hello." Mabel pulled Chloe inside with a welcoming embraced. "Lex and Clark just hired me back. I've only been here a few days."

"What about your restaurant?"

She waved dismissively. "I've got a competent chef running the place. They don't need me. Lex does. How have you been?"

"Good." Chloe shrugged off her coat and hung it on the hook next to the door. "I'm sort of between pieces right now, taking a break."

"Never thought you'd be one to do that."

"Yeah, me neither," she said with a self-conscious smile. "But it just worked out like that. Is, uh, is Lex home?"

Mabel nodded. "He's in his office. Are you staying for dinner?"

"I'd like that, thanks. Lana might be coming over, too."

"No problem. They'll be plenty of food." She squeezed Chloe's shoulder then went back to the small kitchen.

Chloe crossed the room to the hall, and down to Lex's office. He was inside, buried in books, his computer on, music playing softly in the background. Even though he was listening to some classical song, he was still singing "It's A Small World" softly to himself.

"Lex?" Chloe said from the door.

Lex turned. "Chloe. Hey." He capped his highlighter and lay it on the book. "What brings you here?"

She stepped further in and sat on the couch. "Oh, nothing much. I just… I was talking to Lois earlier. She mentioned you, and I'd realized it's been awhile since we just, you know. Visited."

He rolled his eyes. "Right. And you were so taken with the idea of seeing me, you just couldn't wait two more days until you were invited."

"I thought I had an open invitation."

"Doesn't mean you can't abuse it." He stood and stretched his back, breathing deeply.

He really had gained weight. Not a ton, but enough to be noticeable, especially around the waist.

"So," he said after a moment. "What do you think is wrong?"

"Nothing. Probably. I mean, there are tons of rumors circulating, you know."

"Oh, I know. Ran into Jason and his boyfriend. Got an earful. Mark called, too, trying to make sure everything was okay." He sat down again. "Come on, you must have a theory. Am I dying? Getting a divorce? Is something wrong with Clark? What?"

She licked her lips. "Well. Uh, I thought that maybe. maybe you're pregnant."

He raised an eyebrow, but otherwise didn't outwardly react. "Wow. You're good. Take the evidence and then make an incredible leap of logic. Congratulations."

Wow. Even though she'd known, she'd hadn't really thought….

"I think I need to sit down," she said shakily.

"You are sitting."

"Oh. Right." She lay down and closed her eyes. "Got anything to drink?"

She heard him rise and leave the room. When he came back, he pressed a bottle and glass into her hand.

"Savor it," he commanded. "It's expensive."

Chloe nodded and sat back up, slowly. She still felt a little dizzy. After pouring, she lifted it to her nose and sniffed, just to make him happy. One didn't want to upset the pregnant man unnecessarily, after all.

It burned going down, making her warm. A mellow feeling spread out through her limbs. With a sigh, she sat back and rested her head on the back of the couch. "So. Pregnant."

"You know, for someone who figured it out, you're acting pretty surprised."

"I've never been in the presence of a pregnant man before. Besides. I always figured if you and Clark did have kids, you'd use Lana or me. It's a shock to hear that you don't need either of us, even if I did suspect." She took another sip. "The wall of weird wasn't enough preparation."

"I'm sure you used up most of your suspension of disbelief on Clark," he said kindly. He was holding a glass of orange juice, which he took a sip of.

"I guess." She finished the glass and poured herself another. "So. How long have you known?"

He shook his head. "Only about a week and a half. I had no clue what was going on with me. I just knew something was wrong. Well. Different. It finally occurred to me that maybe the inevitable had happened."

"Inevitable?"

"It was either pregnancy, or Clark's semen was finally proving detrimental. I decided to go with the more hopeful option." He licked his lips. "Actually, I felt the other one die. That's when I was pretty sure."

"Other one?" Chloe asked faintly.

Lex nodded, eyes haunted. "Kryptonian males only get pregnant in time of population decline. To help increase the population more rapidly, they produce two offspring at a time. With me, only one has successfully implanted. The other tried, but…" He broke off. Swallowed hard.

Shit. See? This was why she needed Lana.

She got up and put her hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry."

"Hey. I've still got one, right?" He smiled at her, and it almost looked real. "And the AI said she looks healthy and viable. So it'll be fine. One is fine."

"Of course one is fine." She squeezed his shoulder. "How does Clark feel about it?"

"He's excited. Happy. So I am." He sounded almost defiant when he added that.

"I don't doubt that. The party. It's to tell everyone, right?"

Lex nodded.

"How are you going to break the news."

"I'm not sure, yet. I'm almost thinking I'll go with something simple and direct." He stood. Took the hem of his shirt in his hand. "Something like, everyone, this is Lara." He pulled his shirt up, revealing a protruding lump in his side.

"Ah!" Chloe shouted involuntarily, recoiling.

Lex let his hem drop. "Yeah, Mabel didn't like it, either." He turned on his heel and left the room.

Crap.

"Lex, wait! Lex, I'm sorry." She jumped to her feet and followed him.

He was in his room, pulling the covers over his head just as she walked in.

"Honey, I'm sorry," she said, climbing onto the bed. "I just wasn't expecting it. It to look like that, you know."

"I'm ugly. I know that. Ugly and fat."

"You are not."

"It looks like a tumor. My baby is ugly and tumor-like."

Well, he had her there.

Chloe burrowed under the covers with him. "The baby doesn't look like a tumor, just the bulge. And it'll change once she really starts to grow, right?"

"I'm going to be lopsided. I'm supposed to have one on each side, but I wasn't strong enough and killed the other baby." He eyes were bright.

She stroked his cheek. "Is that what you really think?"

"I'm underweight. In order for Lara to be okay, she has to get food. I have to give her enough food, and I haven't been. I barely had enough for Lara. The other baby didn't have a chance. I killed it."

"You didn't know you were going to get pregnant. You didn't know. You were eating to keep yourself healthy, which is normally what men need to worry about. You didn't know you had babies inside you. Why would you?"

"I'm married to an alien."

"Did said alien mention that he might be able to get you pregnant?"

Lex sighed and closed his eyes. A tear fell from on.

Chloe wiped it away. "Babe, you can't be too hard on yourself, okay? Not for anything. You're not ugly. The baby isn't ugly. You know Lara is going to be the most beautiful little girl in the world. Just look at her daddies."

He sniffed. His mouth crimped.

Chloe kissed him gently. "Just, you know. Don't flash everyone at the party. Not like that. Tell everyone first. Then let them see her." She hesitated. "Can I touch her?"

Lex pulled up his shirt, eyes still closed, exposing the bump.

Hand trembling, Chloe reached out and touched it gently.

It was warm. Soft. It didn't feel any different from the rest of Lex's skin, or like any other pregnant belly she'd ever touched.

"Wow," she breathed, stroking it softly. "Amazing."

Lex smiled. When he opened his eyes, there was an unmistakable glow in them. "Isn't she?"

"Yes, she is."

"You know. You're getting better at this."

She blushed. "Thanks."

"But I still want Lana."

"Well, don’t worry. She's on her way."

Lex closed his eyes. Sniffed. Snuggled into the pillows. "Good."

Poor Lex! (Even though I'm laughing at him, because I am evil.) I really love your brilliant Chloe! My favorite line was "The wall of weird wasn't enough preparation." and my favorite part was at the end, when Chloe told Lex that Lana was already on the way for him.

So absolutely awesome!! Awesome awesome! I absolutely love this view into the (possible) future of COTW. :-)

But that's what you got when your city's savior was a repressed millionaire who dressed like a bat, had a sidekick named Robin, and thought that hanging upside-down was foreplay.

That was just hilarious! A wonderful touch that made me laugh a lot. :-D

I just got caught up on this, and I love it! I love Lex angsting over losing his looks and everyone's reactions to his weight gain. I also love that Chloe has gotten better at handling Lex, but that Lex still wants Lana. *g*

And poor Lex! Losing one of the babies! :( *hugs Lex*

Lex and his looks have always been fun for me to write. I try not to go overboard with his eating issues in the real COTW, but this just makes it easy and fun.

And Lex does need lots of hugs over his lost baby. Hugs and kisses.

More to come soon. I hope. Thank you!
