I don't remember where (probably fanficrants), but I remember reading someone, somewhere ranting about how Dean would never fall in love with one woman and want to stay with them. Now, I agree that nothing, short of getting his arms and legs cut off, would ever stop Dean from hunting (and maybe not even that; he strikes me as rather a Black Knight type, who might be willing to slow down, just a little, should he lose all his limbs). So I agree that Dean is never going to "settle down" and stay in place with one person for the rest of his life.
But the rant went on to say that Dean is a "woman in every port" type of guy. But... that's just fanon so far, right? I mean, if you think about it, it must be. We've read fics that discuss Dean and women, Dean going out to get laid, leaving Sam in a bar to screw someone in the back of the Impala, etc., but, on the show, Dean has yet to actually have sex. Yes, he hits on anything with breasts, but does he seem seriously intent on getting them to anyone? Because, it seems to me, that he never really backs up his flirting with anything serious.
In Wendigo, Dean flirts with Hailey something fierce, but he never pushes it past flirting. Even at the end, when he intimates that sex would be a good way to thank him, he seems to be joking around. In Skin, he's attracted to Sam's friend, but it's the skinwalker, not Dean, who pushes it. Same with Fred's character in Dead in the Water, and Layla the other night: he's attracted, he flirts, but he never, ever pushes. And we all know that, if he really made a push to get a woman into bed, he could do it.
I don't think that Dean is really a womanizer. I don't think he *wants* a different woman in every port. I almost think that Dean's a one woman kind of guy, or at least he's the type who, if he could (ie had time), he would commit. Look how committed he is to the job.
I think that since Dean has no permanence in his life, and because the job is more important to him, he'd rather have no girl than many girls. He can't have one girl. He could sleep around, but he doesn't. I'm not saying Dean has never had, nor ever will, have casual sex. I'm just saying that I think the rant was wrong. Dean totally could fall in love with one person and want to be with only her. He just won't allow himself to, because saving people will always come first.
Well, that, and the fact he's totally doing his brother.
Someone created a Mary Sue Litmus for Supernatural. One of the way to earn points was Sam or Dean being in lust with the character. Shouldn't it really be if Sam lusts for the character or Dean does not (if the character is female). Because... Dean flirts/seems to lust after every female they run across (unless she's underage), so it'd seem more unusual for him *not* to be attracted.

I think Dean would seriously date someone if not commit to them, but he doesn’t know how to balance those two worlds. It’s like his father kept the boys exiled from having any sort of a real life. To him, it’s foreign to have both.

Yeah, there is that little issue.

My fic isn't wincest. *bats eyelashes* (Sorry; I'm in a strange mood tonight.:)

Date: 2006-01-20 01:56 pm (UTC)He does flirt well with women, and he has the quality that makes women want to "save him", so should he try to keep in touch or form bonds (however slight) with women he comes into contact with, he could have that. But the way he's been screwed up by his upbringing and his mother's death, it keeps him from being able to relate genuinely with many people at all. He's flirted some. He honestly connected with the kid in the water ep. But usually Sam is the human side. Layla felt very much like the exception rather than the rule, and she was the exception because she satisfied an emotional need Dean had (if only for a few days).
