Does the toe have a small wound, hangnail, etc.? Is it painful to the touch? Warm? Reddish? In other words, is there an infection?
If so, here's what you do: get a pot of water absolutely as hot as you can stand, so hot it makes you go ouchy-ouchy and not be able to put your foot in all the way at first, and soak the toe (and outlying regions). When the water cools down to be pleasant, repeat. Do this at least once a day until the infection clears up.
The thing is, circulation in one's feet is comparatively poor, and this procedure (a) increases circulation of handy white blood cells to munch the bad guys, and (b) the increased temp actually cooks the bad guys, that's one reason we get fevers. In fact, back in the 1930s someone won a Nobel Prize for discovering that you could cure advanced syphilis by giving people specially-weakened strains of malaria: the fever from the malaria nuked the syphilis germs. Later people found it would also work if you physically heated the person up enough to raise their body temperature to 103-104.
Don't try this at home on your whole body, but it works very well on toes.
The kids in my mother's class do that all the time. I'm always amazed by that- when I was in elementary school, not even the worst kids would do that. Of course, that was over 20 years ago. Now I feel old.
toes!
