Sky Captain, and the World of Tomorrow
Sep. 18th, 2004 07:06 pmHey, guess how my my Advair costs? $110.95. Apparently, I have to meet a deductable. Fuckers. My new insurance is supposed to kick in sometim in October, I think. It doesn't look like I have a deductible for drugs, but the annual deductible is only 250 to begin with. I have no idea what that means, and if I'd gone with an HMO I wouldn't have one, but then I'd have an HMO. I'm a klutz and a hypocondriac. I need freedom.
Anyway
Loved, loved, loved it. It was fantastic. Beautiful, fun, cool. There were flying things and stunts and aiplanes that swam. Slash and adventure and funniness. I actually didn't find it all that predictable, which surprised me. They did a good job, I think, of hinting at stuff without giving you a roadmap.
Paltrow's character was cool. She reminds me of what I've always pictured Lois Lane to be: smart, driven, obessive, snarky, and beautiful. She and Law had good chemistry and I really appreciated that the movie didn't focus on her as a Romantic Heroine. instead, she was the reporter who wanted the story and, oh yes, she and Law used to be a couple.
Lots of slash. Joe is obessed with Dex, Giovanii Ribisi's character. Dex, Joe, and Polly obviously had been together at one point in their lives, even if Dex wasn't in on the main relationship. They all screwed around, though, and both are very fond of Dex. And Frankie (Jolie)/Joe/Dex were togetehr, too. I think Dex is sort of the cute, bemused boy of everything. He's all into his gadgets and comics and has a boyish excitement that draws his older, more cyinical companions to him. He's probably seduced all the time.
My dream pairings at the end of the movie? Joe/Dex and Polly/Frankie with every pairing in between. This movie is kind of like POTC and lends itself to that. :P
Anyway, I recommend it just for the looks. And if the first robot-monster scene doesn't do anything for you, dont' worry, it gets better. The first time they showed up, I got nervous because it wasn't very exciting, but I got drawn in later.
Two thumbs up.
Okay, off to write.
