I signed the contract today! I'm offically contracted to be a 6th grade teacher.
Sheesh. I *never* really thought about teaching sixth grade. Fifth is the highest I've thought about, but there's no way I'm turning down a job in such an attractive district. Besides, there's nothing wrong with sixth graders that a little TLC and a lot of dicipline can't do. Besides, Ancient Cultures, actual novels *crosses fingers for some on grade level readers*, and math I barely understand! :)
There's a part of me that wants to start a new journal (Diary of a First Year, Sixth Grade Teacher) because of course I want to be the next Esme but know I won't hand write in a journal. I'll have to think about that. I'm not set on the idea of dividing my fannish and real life, but I guess I could have fannish/real and teaching life in two separate journals.
God, I'm so scared of what will happen to writing. I love writing fanfic; I just hope I have time to continue. And to keep up with online stuff, especially episode meta. I won't trim down my friend's list if I don't have to, but I will have to limit myself to maybe an hour a day when I get home from school, and then some time if I "finish" work (I know; a teacher's work is never done).
I can't wait to start looking for apartment. I looked at a few places online, but I really have no concept of what I'll be able to afford on my salary (which I think is pretty good for a single person living in an apartment). The ideal would be to get a 2 bed/2bath and then, when I have time, find a room mate. I don't want to move into someone else's apartment; I want it to be my own and then get roomates to move in with me, so I have a little more control.
I also need a place that will allow pets. I won't get a cat right away, but I want it to be an option. I'd also like a dog to be an option, because my cousins just got the cutest little dog in the world, and it's the first dog I've ever fallen in love with on first site. I'd like to get one eventually. But, when I first move out, I'll content myself with fish.
Oh! Does anyone have a suggestion for a classroom pet? I'm thinking either fish, rats (2), or a gerbile (which I've never had). I might have fish and a rodent, if I'm allowed.
Now all I have to do is start temping to earn enough money to move out. Otherwise, I'll have to wait a few months, which wont' be terrible, but ... Dude! I'm a teacher! It's time to go!

Do you start teaching right away, with summer school, or do you get a few months to prepare
I have until August before I start. There's a few inservices, then I start offically in September. So I've got a few months. :)

Date: 2004-06-25 06:20 pm (UTC)Sadly, no. It's about when they begin to hit puberty, which means I get to teach sex ed (I thin). Yay. :)
I hope I enjoy teaching. I have before, but I've never had my own class. I'm so excited!!!
Good luck!
Thank you!!!

Date: 2004-06-23 12:12 pm (UTC)Good luck with the apartment search. However, don't cross housesharing totally off your list. I've had a great experience from answering an ad in the newspaper for a room in a shared house. The people are nice, the house is in a great location, and everything is much nicer than what I could afford on my own. Plus, in a houseshare, you're generally not signing a year-long lease, so if it goes sour you're not locked in.

Housesharing sounds like an interesting idea. I'd just have to find a place big enough for all my stuff; that's the problem I'm running into at home. I need space.! :) But, if I'm not finding anything, I'll definetly look into that. Thanks!

Yeah, I think I am going to get a least a fish, if not some sort of mammal as well. Fish are very soothing to look at, especially when the aquarium is all pretty.
