Reading the meta/reviews over on Peter David's web blog is painful. They all (even PAD at times) seem to miss the point. Or, they dance around it, but *just don't get it*. Even people I disagree with on LJ and mailing lists seem to ... get it. I don't know how to describe it, but it's like this flatness of misunderstanding there and I think the major part of it comes from judging the characters by their comic personalities. We tend to get surprised if Lex does something morally ambiguious; they're all like, "But he's eveil! What?"

I don't know. Maybe it's just me me.

Glad I don't read it then. I'd probaby get really pissed. There's enough of that on LJ to send me into fits - and there really isn't that much of it here!

It's not that they bash or forgive any of the characters over there, it's just they don't analyze them well. And tend to be confused by their actions because they can't seem to get it through their heads that a. SV isn't the comic verse and b. the final outcomes aren't determined by the comics. It's teh same problem I have with a lot of the people who bash Clark's arguemnts.

WORD! I have friends like that! It's totally obnoxious, and I don't just think it's my fan-girlishness talking.

How boring is the series if you see Clark as totally good and Lex as totally bad from the beginning? Why would you even watch?

I have no idea. It's a little silly, if you ask me.

so, what do they say when Lex does something Good?

How boring -- to NOT see Woobie!Lex as trying SO DAMN HARD to be a good person, or a mostly good person, or a mostly good person except for these areas, and a mostly good but-what-he-don't-know-won't-hurt-him person?

You're right and they're wrong. We're NOT making this up, Lex is TRYING to not be his father. But, like a Greek Tragedy, despite the MANY MANY MANY times one little change could have made everything better, Clark's actions make Lex Evil. *sigh*

The problem is, they don't say *anything* intelligent at all. PAD sometimes gets close, but he reviews so many things at once, he doesn't get into any one thing in detail. And his fans are all, "Yay, that episode sucked because ..."

What's funny is, the trend seems to be any episode that LJ-land seems to overwhelmingly respond positively to, PAD or his fanboys *don't* like it. They gave Memoria a fairly positive review, but there's just no substance.

Mostly, it's not that they forgive or condemn everything the characters do, they just don't get it. "But why is Clark acting like such a jerk? He's Superman!" "But why did Lex do this? He's ..." (not always evil, but whatever). There just isn't the same level of thought given to anythign over there.

How sad to be so simple.

this just reminds me -- despite the problem with SV, the silliness of not telling ANYONE no matter the situation, that SV IS a cool show. Lex has been so slowly, so subtly turning to the dark side of the force. It's so tragically beautiful......
