Bad plans. Bad class. Bad school. Having to stand a half and hour waiting for parents to pick their kids up in front of the school with *no* other teacher out there to make sure everything was going right. A stupid kid almost hit me with his backpack. I'm sick and tired of not knownig where i"m going every day, of teachers not leaving plans that are legible or good, of not putting materials out, of know-it-all asshat kids who tattle on each other all the time and won't shut up.
You're subbing right? That, as the subject says, is its own circle in Hell. Subbing sucks ass and it'll *never* get any better, I hate to tell you. Still, it's a necessary evil step to getting a teaching job, so tell yourself the little monsters are frisky angels and that the other teachers are harried saints, and learn to drink 100-proof vodka without any visual effects. Hang in there!
Subbing sucks ass and it'll *never* get any better
oooh, I hate to disagree, but I had a great time subbing once I figured out what I was doing.
Yes, it sucks when you don't know where you're going or what you're doing, but the longer you do it, the better you'll get. Soon you'll be able to walk into a room with no lesson plans at all and wing it like a pro.
Until then, however, it IS going to suck. Every sucky day, however, is another lesson in how to do it better.
AND, if the kids just SUCK, then write down the school and class and vow never to return!
Gods, your lucky then. I subbed for three years, all grades and various schools, and every day was a nightmare. Then again, I was also 22 and hadn't become a bitter old bitch yet. Now I could probably make those little darlings cry. *eg*

The hardest thing for me is the stress of not knowing where i"m going to be the next day, or even *if* I'm going to have a job. And then going, and not knowing the rules and such for the classroom and the kids acting up while i'm figureing it out and all that. I *really* hope I don't have to do this much longer.
What age group do you prefer? Once I got started I only accepted K - 3rd, and flat out refused to teach above 3rd. At first I was driving all over creation (3 different towns) but eventually I got to where I was working every day if I wanted to.
There are 53 schools in one district I sub in., 6 in another, and 61 in the last. The second two, I can't get jobs in because they have a computerized system which I can't get in contact with enough to make it work. The first district pays the least, so I'm constatnly trying to get jobs in the other two districts. The only grades I really, *really* hate are K and first; the kids are too little and tend to be whiney brats. But, then, it gets on my nerves with the 4-6 kids tattle tell on each other all day, like they did Monday.
I'm stressed beacuse I"m not working reguarly. i'm stressed because the teachers are disorganized and while I can wing the lessons, it bugs me when the materials aren't organized, or the rules aren't posted, and I'm not told what the consquences are, etc. The last two weeks have been aweful like that. It's like these teachers expect me to know what their students are used to for routines, proceedures, etc, and I just don't.
I'm sorry you had such a bad day. Subbing is a difficult thing to do, precisely because the kids think they can get away with acting like wild beasts, and you never know what to expect going in. I'll cross my fingers that it gets better for you soon.

Thank you. I thinmk I'm going to start carrying around a baseball bat in my bag and threatening to whap kids that cross the line. That's allowed, right?
Right now, I'd just like to get into my own classroom to teach and see if I need another career. Right now, I'm teaching other's kids with other's rules and proceedures and it's just too stressful.
Even if you don't get hired full-time next year, try teaching summer school. I didn't like subbing and, due to my husband's health, can't take on a full-time job, but summer school was different. Having your own classroom for six weeks is wonderful. It will also enable you to show a principal your abilities and up the probability of being hired full-time or as a long-term sub.
