The real mystery is how old is Lucas? His adoption papers were switched with Clark's of course (Lineage); yet, Lucas is supposed to be 18... but Clark is only... however old.

I went through that about a month ago when I was trying to write my answer to Lineage. For the first time, I realized how little sense it all made. Now, my math ain't all that great, but I'm thinking he'd have had to be born in 1984 to be 18, right? So two years older than Clark. I think that he probably lived with Rachel for 2 years then before Lionel forced her to give him up, but I can't explain the age thing away.
And, truthfully, I don't understand why Lionel didn't a. just put Lucas in some sort of safehouse and visit him every once in while (as implied in Lineage) or b. give him to Morgan Edge to take care of secretly. I mean, I know they aren't exactly the best of allies now (well, by Phoenix), but they're still the oldest friends and seem to trust each other more than they trust other people.
Unless Clark *is* 18, only he was held back two years in school and is thus older than everyone else. But, really, the nitpicky details are the ones that are most muddled in this show.
