(no subject)

Toe update: It feels better. I put a band-aid on it today and it seems to have... scabbed over or something. But I'll still soaked it like mecurtin suggeted.

Was amused by a wank over at fanficrants today. Someone didn't like the use of 'cock' 'ass' and 'fuck' in fic. Someone else thought it was "unprofessional" and "crude." Now, I'll will grant that it's probably overused in fic. We (I'm not thinking of anyone in particulary, I just don't want to say I), as writers, need to think of different ways to refer to everything within the scene. Cock needn't be banished (I love that word), but finding either alternative ways to refer to it or work around it a few times woudln't be a bad thing.

however, one thing that was brought up was while it's okay in dialogue, it's not in prose (or anything not dialogue). I don't agree. When I write a scene in third person, I do my best to emulate the thought patterns of the character I'm writing. If I was writing from Jonathan's POV, I woudln't use that word (I also woudln't write him in a situation where the word woudl pop up, but...); Lex? Yes. I think I slowly worked it into Clark's thoughts and speech, but I did it with the word "fuck", too.

Obviously, part of it is a writing style thing. I think that 3rd person limited can be written in the patter of the character without it being redundant or better served in first person. I coudln't tell you why I choose 3rd person over 1st, except I think that it tends to make the story flow better and gives me more options, especially in SV. Right now, 1st person seems to work for Lost.
