I didn't even have to cheat to get that score, although, I do have to admit, my series uses a lot of cliches. But I had an advantage: it asked about my last story, not entire series. And the last story (not COTW 33; I did it against 34) was relatively cliche free. I did, however, fess up to the number of times a character is raped (attempted rapes on Clark 1 + 1 molestation attempt; Lex was raped once; Lana was sort of raped once). And, of course, I commit the terrible sin of pet names (angel and, to some extent, baby). I also feminize Lex, but not blatanly (I hope) and not too much. But that's over the course of the whole series, not the last fic, so it's okay. ;)

I've been thinking about names today. Like, if I could give myself a new name, what would it be. Not that I hate my real name, but sometimes it doesn't feel like it's mine. It's like a lable my parents stamped on my forehead when I was born without waiting to see who I was. But I don't know what I would rename myself. It couldn't be too feminine, which knocks 'Serafina' out of the running. I like: Kali, Adrienne, Joy, Kasey (Casey, or K.C.), Kristina, Melody, Hunter (to me, it's a girls name). But none of them would fit.

The problem is, I don't have too many favorite girl's names. There's tons of boy names I like: Killian, Lex, Noah, Gavin, Garrett, Daniel, Joel, Ian (even though it means 'John'), Scott, Aaron, Travis, Ryan.... boys names aren't a problem. Girls? A little harder.

So, the question is, is my given name my 'real' name, or am I going to run across a name one day that really belongs to me? Or, should i give up on the whole name thing and let people call me, "Hey you"?

Serafina isn't my real name. She was my buffy mary sue and since I was just going online at the time, I adopted it. And it stayed

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've always hated my name. It's so plain. And non-gender specific. I like Raijahn or Rai much, much better. (pronounced ra - like the sun god - haan) Of course, Raijahn is my alter ego, not so much me.

I like your name. I think. Huh. I guess unless Serafina is your real name, then I don't know it. *shrugs* Oh well. ;o)

So there's this great series, _Women on Fire_. It's a fantasy world in a lot of ways, but like all good one a smart comment on ours. In Idiere, everyone has a used name, which is the name they are known by by most of the world. Then they have a real name that really only the shriia (priestess) who recorded it and their mother and whoever she told and they themselves know.

In my book, there's my mundane name, which plenty of people know, my online name and its variants, and then the various other names that I think are much closer to my real name. I don't tell anyone those for the same reason no one in Idiere tells anyone theirs. In _WOF_ knowing someone's real name gives them immense power over you. As a result, the names that I've stumbled across that I think are closer to my real name are names I keep to myself. Superstitious, maybe, but it works for me.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

BTW, took the quiz and came out minty fresh.

My dad was determined that I'd be a boy and I'd be a junior, so they didn't even really talk about girls' names. My mom would throw one out once in a while, dad would reject it, life would move on. So when I was born, on an impulse they named me Barbara, which I've always loathed, and no one can spell. I cannot tell you the number of times my name's been misspelled "Barbra."

My dh used to work for a man who went by Sam, but neither his first nor middle name was anything like Sam. I've always wanted to sit Sam down and ask him how he can get away with that. I just *know* that if I said, "call me (insert alternative name here)" I'd get hassled because that's not the name on my birth certificate.

And why not Lex? You could make everyone think it's short for Alexandra. ;-)

Well, uh, unless I'm thinking of Lex Luthor, the name 'Lex' makes me think of a little boy (about three or so) in fuzzy blue footie pajamas. I don't know where the image came from, or why it's so specific, but it's more of a name for one of my adopted kids, and less one for me. ;)

Actually, my Dad's family had a problem with names too. They all called my Dad 'Tony' and his name is Mike (actually, it was from his middle name, but for years he though his first name was "Anthony'). They called my dad's father Mike, but I can't remember his real name. It wasn't Michael. And everyone in my mother's family had nicknames, so she chose names for us tht couldn't be shortened or changed.

I really don't know what I would call myself if I could choose. All the names I like, I've already associated them with something else, so they're no longer possible for me.

Well, then, when you get Lex (the baby, not the billionaire), you'd better run right out and get those footie pajamas then, shouldn't you? 8-D

Boyish names for girls always remind me of the show Sisters. In fact, Swoosie Kurtz's character was named Alex, come to think of it.
