Once upon a time, when I was an itty, bitty little girl, I came into the living room to kiss my daddy good-night. He was watching TV. As I turned away from him after saying good night, I saw that,on the television, people were ripping their faces off to reveal...
Well, I don't even remember. I got as far as the face ripping before my brother and I started screaming.
For years, if the show V was referenced, it was done with miming the ripping of our skin. I didn't care why (my parents tried to explain it wasn't real skin). I was reminded that TV wasn't real. Didn't matter. V had become a MAJOR THING in my life and I was SCARRED FOR LIFE.
So,it was with trepidation that I sat down to watch it last night. I actually did have to cover my eyes at one point simply because of what happened when I was 4 (or whatever).
Because, I keep think of the show as thus:
In V a big space ship comes to hover over a bunch of different cities. Inara's face appears and she talks about how they come in peace, blah, blah, blah. Muffin doesn't seem very interested in all this, as she is an FBI agent and is tracking down a terrorist. Or something. I wasn't paying... really any attention. Anyway, her partner is Wash, and it's weird to see him not be goofy. Or sounding like Heimlich or whatever. They go off to chase a terrorist and find a dead guy that "didn't commit suicide" as Wash so aptly notes. As they guy is tied up to a chair, I don't understand the purpose of the line.
Anyway, in another plot, there's this girl I first think is the ghost from Being Human, but then realize it's the chick from the Nine who reminds me of Cordelia. She does this by smiling and, thus, looking like Cordelia. Her boyfriend proposes to her, and she doesn't answer. Meanwhile, the boyfriend is being contacted by someone and telling them in a fearful/angry tone that "I don't do that anymore."
Muffin's son goes on a tour of an alien space ship. I am shocked that they aren't eaten. Of course, I'm shocked that it's a half hour into the show and there's no skin ripping yet. Anyway, he sees a hot alien chick who wants to be Charlize Therone but isn't, and he wants to become an ambassador. Apparently, the best way to do this is by being a crappy tagger. Muffin has a great scene where she's all sarcastic about something.
Anyway, Scott Wolf, who looks even more inhuman than any of the Vs, interviews Inara, who is all creepy and manipulative. She looks like she wants to eat him. I suspect she will eat him at some point. Anyway, his exciting character arc is he gets to choose between integrity and fame. I wonder what he'll choose.
Muffin and Wash go to a SECRIT MEETING that... someone (I guess the dead guy) was going to go to. Muffin almost gets herself kicked out by asking a bunch of questions, like, "What the hell is this meeting?" when it's not a bunch of terrorists (or drugs... again, I wasn't paying attention; I was setting up a community). THey all cut their skulls and are declared "safe". Then, the leader starts spouting what sounds like paranoia until he whips out a picture of the terrorist. Muffin's all, "That ain't an alien, that's a terrorist." The leader's like, "You stupid, aren't you?"
Then, a toclafane comes in a shoots spikes into a bunch of people. THey all start screaming and fighting and then WASH COMES IN AND TRIES TO KILL MUFFIN! She hits him on the head and OMG HIS FACE STARTS COMING OFF AND I HAVE TO CLOSE MY EYES BECAUSE NOOOOOOO!
Also, the guy dating Not!Cordelia is a V, only he's a good V. And there's a priest who will,I assume, sleep with Muffin. Maybe. Oh,and he got pictures of something from who I think was Ron Howard's brother.
In the end, Inara tells everyone that the Vs want to make more "health clincs" and "heal" everyone. I wonder if any of these people have ever seen anything about aliens ever. But,then I often wonder the same thing when scientists do stuff in real life (only, I wonder if they've ever read sci fi). She spouts on and on about how they're all peaceful or whatever and Muffin's son decides to sign up to be an ambassador.
Next week, aliens and human have sex. Wash comes back ready to kill. And there is no Michael Ironside. Neither does the original miniseries, but I have to watch that to understand the tv series, right?
Anyway. Stay tuned next week for more of my totally accurate recap of...
V (not for Vendetta. Just for shit's and giggles)
