Sam was whistling as he climbed the steps to the station. Everything felt good today, even with the case weighing on his mind. After the morning he'd had, anything felt possible. The world was his for the taking and every cliche he could think of. Whereas yesterday, everything had seemed hazy and impossible, today he was confident.

The case would be solved soon. He and Gene and the rest would find the criminals who'd hurt Mrs. Jones and the others. They'd find the villains, the women would make a recover, and life would go on.

And, once the case was done, he and Gene would have time. Have time to do some exploring with each other. Get through some more options for sex Sam had listed off that morning.

That morning. Morning had been brilliant. What he'd expected to be a little talk, simple little reassurance that Sam wasn't just going to pounce Gene and start buggering him--in fact, he rather hoped it'd be the other way around, at least sometimes--had turned into something a lot more. Verbal sex. Probably a step down from frottage, and yet just as satisfying in some ways. Watching Gene get more and more aroused from his voice, from his word. The power, the headiness. The...

"Sammy," an unfamiliar man greeted him with a smile. His hand clapped Sam on the shoulder, almost making him stumble. Squeezed. "You're looking good. How've you been?"

He just stared rather stupidly. He didn't know the man, who was tall, slim, good looking. Blonde hair and hazel green eyes. Bushy mustache and clean shaven cheeks. Suit properly done up, tie neatly in place. Silver ring on his right hand, watch on his left. Cigarette in his pocket.

And he knew Sam. But Sam had no clue who he was.

He's name is Charles. He's a DI from Hyde. Took our place.

Oh, bloody hell.

"Charles," Sam said dutifully. He felt abruptly numb.

"Seems your friends in Hyde," Gene drawled from a nearby desk, "had a similar run in with our granny-hitting house robbers. Only they let 'em get away and run out here. To be our problem. Your DCI Morgan sent a dear friend out to help us out."

Sam turned his head. Gene's arms were crossed over his chest. His jaw was stuck out, brows furrowed. Eyes near black.

Charles shrugged. "We didn't do our job. We all know that. But we did gather some evidence that might help you out. DCI Morgan thought that, in the interest of solving the crimes before anyone else gets hurt, we should combine our forces."

"This is the same DCI Morgan that sent Sammy here to rat me out, wasn't it?" Gene cocked his head, hands tightening into fists.

A look of shock swept over Charles's face. He looked from Gene to Sam and back again. "I... is that why he was sent? I..." He looked back at Sam. "That's why you're here? Then why..." He bit off his last words. Cleared his throat. His eyes told Sam that they'd be talking later. "I don't know anything about that, sir. Sorry if it's true. It's not why I'm here."

"I need to use the loo," Sam said. He smiled best he could, then turned and made a quick exit.

Sweat standing on his forehead, stomach tied up in knots. Just like his weekly phone calls from Morgan. Or nights when he'd have strange dreams, memories that weren't his.

The restroom was empty, blessedly. He leaned over the sink. Splashed cool water on his face. He felt sick. Shaky. He wanted to lie down. Crawl into a closet and hide.

But he couldn't. He had a job to do. Never mind that he didn't know what was going on, who that man was. How he knew him. He had people to protect.

He slurped water some water out of his cupped hand. Turned off the faucet. Straightened.

"Shit!" he shouted, jumping back from the mirror.

Heart pounding, Sam whirled. Looked over his shoulder.

No one there.

He swallowed hard. Looked back at the mirror.

There. There it was again. Clear as day. Just over his shoulder was...

Him.

"This is impossible," Sam breathed. He approached the mirror and placed his hand on the cool surface. He touched his face in the mirror, then slid it over to...

His face.

"What the fuck is going on?"

"I don't know.

Sam started. "You're... You're talking to me."

"I've been talking to you all week. Since, what? Saturday? Sunday? The image shrugged. "I've been talking for longer. You just never heard before."

"It's happened. I really have gone mad. Finally. Truly, deeply, insane." He rested his head against the mirror.

"Actually, if you want to be technical, I think I'm the one who's mad."

"What do you mean?" he asked tiredly.

"Well. It's my body, isn't it? My mind? I'm the one who was here first. Sam Williams. Born and raised. Don't know where you came from. Haven't decided if you're really from the future or if I've just gone starkers.

"No. No, I'm Sam Tyler," Sam told the reflection. "I'm... I'm real."

Williams shrugged. "So am I. I'm just inside you now." He licked his lips. "Look. I like you, I really do. And I think you run my life better than I ever did. Although, your taste in blokes is questionable." He smiled suddenly. "I rather liked Annie. You know, I've never been with a bird before. Well, once, but it was shite. She was fun.

Sam blinked. Shook his head. "I... Go away. You don't exist."

"I do. And you're going to need me, what with Charles around and all. You don't want him going calling Frank and telling him to come out and get you, do you? If he thinks that we're really sick and not getting any better, that we can't take care of ourselves, he'll come and get us."

"No he won't."

"You don't know him like I do, Sam. He'll do it. So don't fuck this up."

Sam shook his head. Stepped back from mirror. "This is nuts. I'm not listening to you anymore. You do not exist."

"You took over my body the day of the crash, Sam!"

He couldn't help it. Instead of walking away like he'd planned, Sam turned and faced the mirror again.

Williams, or whatever the hallucination was, stuffed his hands in his pockets Looked down at the floor. "I was coming from Hyde to spy on Hunt, just like Frank said. He had this plan that we'd save policing. Make it have dignity and honor and... any he thought Hunt was a bag of shite, so he thought to start there. And I'm the only one he trusted. None of the others knew. It was the two of us, and some of the higher ups. Anyway, I was driving and I got this blazing headache. Couldn't think. There was this flash of light. I pulled off the road and stumbled out of the car. And, next thing I knew, I was here."

"What?" Sam snorted. "In the mirror?"

"No. Stuck in the back of your mind. All I could do was watch what you were doing. You just... took over. With a name and a background and all these things. The way you police, it's a lot like Frank, but it's more, I don't know. Creative." He shrugged. "Frank always said I was brilliant. Said I had a brilliant but fragile mind. So, maybe I cracked finally. Made up another personality. Which was fine. Like I said, you're rather interesting, even if your taste in men is suspect."

"You want me to believe that... that I've got multiple personalities. That... that I'm not real. That..."

"I'm not going to do anything. I'm fine with the way things are."

"But..."

The door was pushed open. Charles walked in.

Sam stepped back, heart in his throat. He threw a quick glance at the mirror, but of course Charles didn't notice that there were two Sams in it. Why would he? It was just a delusion.

"Hi, Sammy. Thought you were taking a bit," Charles said. "Thought I'd come see how you were."

"I'm fine. Thanks."

Charles nodded and pulled a cigarette from the package in his pocket. "Morgan told me that you had amnesia. He said when he came down, you didn't remember who he was."

He nodded. "I was in an accident. Sort of rattled my brain, I guess. I'm fine now, though."

"Then why are you still here? If what Hunt said is true, you were here to expose him for being a crooked copper, why are you still here? I mean, obviously your cover's blown. What's the point?"

"I like it here. There's... good people. And Gene... Hunt's not a crooked copper. He's just... needs some guidance sometimes. Morgan wanted to destroy anyone who doesn't do things his way, but Hunt doesn't need to be destroyed. Just guided in the right direction. So, I'm staying."

Charles shrugged. "That's fine and all, but... God, Sammy. You've got to know what you being gone is doing to Morgan. You haven't even been back for a visit."

"I'm hardly the only DI in the world," Sam said. "Thought you took my place. He can't be that bad off."

"That's not what I'm talking about." Charles frowned. "You don't remember?"

He sighed. "Remember what?"

"Sammy, you've been living with Frank Morgan since you were twelve years old. He put you through university. Helped you through training. He's practically raised you, and now you're not even talking to him."

He... He'd what? He...

"I don't," Sam said, mouth dry. "I, um. He... My parents died when I was twelve, right?"

Charles nodded. "Morgan took you in after they died. He raised you up good and proper, didn't he?"

"And I'm still living with him?"

The other man averted his eyes. Took a long drag on the cigarette.

A tight knot formed in Sam's stomach. A horrible suspicion.

He wet his lips. "I guess, then. I guess I should give him a call. He, uh. He didn't tell me." His good mood had been killed and buried. His headache was back, prickling behind his eyes. Squeezing his throat. "I should have guessed, I suppose. He kept calling." For his catamite.

"That's not how it was."

The door opened again. "Great. Now I've got two fairies from Hyde wasting time in the loo, fixing their make-up and chatting about the latest fashions," Gene growled. "If you ladies don't mind, we have a case to solve so get your arses out here!" He disappeared.

Charles snorted and ground out his fag in the sink. "Lovely man, there. Must be wonderful working for him. I can see why you stayed."

"He's not that bad once you get used to him."

The other man just rolled his eyes and left.

Sam went back to the sink. He avoided looking at his reflection. Instead, he looked down at his hand. Flexed his fingers. Twisted his wrist, felt it pull, ever so slightly, against where it'd once been broken.

He looked up, back into the mirror. At the ghostly reflection of Sam Williams standing at his shoulder.

Williams refused to meet his eyes.

So MORGAN was Sammy's father-figure-cum-boyfriend-cum-abusive-bastard? And Williams has been in Sam's head the whole time, and his life was such shite he doesn't even mind being a backseat driver for it... Hell, that's just BRILLIANT! I really, really can't wait to see where this goes now, this is just shaping into such a great story, and I can't help but think that the case is wired into the larger backstory for Sam, as well...

This just keeps getting better and better, and I can't wait to read more!

Thank you! I was afraid that this was just too stupid or weird or something. I was afraid this was going to be a make or break chapter. I'm thrilled you liked it. :)

Oh no! Sammy won't be able to have his nookie knowing he's being watched!

This is a wonderful twist. I'm wondering why Sam would still be living with Morgan if it's a father/son relationship. Is it more than that? Is Morgan responsible for Sam's old injuries? (I had to look up catamite - see you're edumacating me!)

Oh, lots of questions! I love this story. Just when I thought they were going to get uncomplicated sex, something comes up to complicate things :D

I love the way this is being updated so quickly without losing any quality of writing. Still a great story :)

It'd be a bit awkward, wouldn't it? But, really, what could he say to Gene? "Sorry, we can't shag 'cause I've got a bloke in my head?"

Catamite is one of my favorite words. I try to work it into fics as often as possible. :) And, as to the rest of your questions, all will be revealed.

Thanks.

OH MY GOD!!!! Just as I thought we were on the downhill stretch, a light amble through an interesting educational programme, you do this!!!!

Does Sam know about all the old injuries he's got? Did Gene tell him? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let Gene and Sam be OK through all this, they've just found each other!

*retreats in shock and fear*

Yes, Sam knows about the old injuries. I figured the doctor would have said something, but Gene could have, too.

They'll get through, don't worry. It'll just be a bumpy road to get there.

Aaah. So this is the start of the bad stuff Sam had a feeling was coming! I've been wondering what the hell was going on with that mirror, and now we know...t'is excellent idea! I don't think I've seen another fic before that deals with having two Sams in the same body, very interesting!

Suddenly I have lots of ideas for where this story could be going...so I'm going to wait and see what you have in store for us!

And I agree with dorsetgirl, let them be okay? Please?!

Thank you! I rather like the idea of there being two Sams. One is never enough, is there.

They will be okay, I promise. I mean, eventually. :)

I did wonder if it would be something like that. Neat. :D And thank you for updating so quickly. Makes me happy. Lol.

There was just one thing though, on of the sentences up near the top reads: "They'd find the villains, the women would make a recover, and life would go on." Which doesn't quite make sense. Should it be "the women would recover" or "the woman would make a recovery"? *smile*

Just when Sam thinks it's safe to go back to CID...SNAP! The evil Morgan strikes again. And kudos for working 'catamite' into the story. Hmm, but why is Sam so sure that Morgan took advantage of him? Oh dear. Really liking this :)

Isn't catamite the best word?

Hmm, but why is Sam so sure that Morgan took advantage of him?

Oh, he's not. Just finds it suspect. On the other hand, he does have Sam Williams living in his head, so maybe it's like sense memory. We'll have to see.

Thanks. :)

Brilliant brilliant brilliant! These last few chapters have been excellent, and this one. Phoar. My mind has slightly been blown. Damn that Morgan! If what I'm thinking is right...that's just so evil. *Shudders*

Lovely! The way you've written this makes either option possible - that Sam really did get transported to 1973 or equally he could have a serious mental disorder. Definitely want to know more about his relationship with Morgan. I like the idea that Morgan misses him because he considers Sam family and he's so controlling that he's unlikely to ever let Sam go.

He seemed very controlling of Sam in the show. Like there was more between him and Sam than just DCI and DI. So I'm taking that and extending (and twisting) it a bit. Fun!

Thank you!
