Yay for more! I agree with you about Gene/Sam, I just didn't express what I meant clearly enough. To me it felt like Sam was instinctively reacting like he was in a abusive situation, even though that isn't the case with Gene. Like Sam was in some sort of abusive relationship before (romantic or otherwise, as your doctor suggested back in part 1), so he's making excuses out of habit, but since he can't remember being in a relationship like that he doesn't know why he's doing it? And Gene's just completely clueless to his reactions.
Does that make any sense? It's late and hard to form coherent thoughts. But I wanted to let you know that it was clear in your writing that Gene wasn't abusive, just not so clear in my comment.
