Just what was so "beastly" about Violet Beauregarde in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? That she was competitive? That she was obviously trained by her mother to think winning was everything, and then worked really hard at everything so she'd be good? That she chewed gum? I mean, yeah, I'll give you the gum chewing (for months on end), but Charlie's family's reaction to her...

I know I'm overthinking it, but, you know. She didn't cheat; she didn't eat part of the ticket because she was so busy eating, she couldn't be bothered to unwrapped the thing; she didn't try to beat the system; she just ate candy bars until she found it. And kicked people's asses.

I'm need to stop thinking.

But she was a GIRL who was willing to work to win. Especially during that time period, girls were supposed to demurely wait until good things dropped in their laps or until some nice guy came along to give things to them. To actually play hard by the rules is only for boys. Plus Charlie was The Chosen One, so none of his competitors could have any redeeming qualities.

I think a lot of CCF's definition of "nasty kids" don't translate very well to modern times. I guess back then, chewing gum was taken to be a very nasty, low class habit?
