Okay, every year on Christmas, my family goes to see a movie. (My "v" key is sticky). We try to go for something happy as I am an emotional wreck and cry at the drop of a hat. Plus, you know. Christmas. Our Yuletide fair in the past has included such movies as Little Women (cried), Evita (cried), Love Actually (probably cried), The Producers (nope), and other such films.
What the hell is going on with the movies this year? I mean, okay, yes. Last year, I pushed hard for Sweeney Todd as the "feel good Christmas movie of the year, but I was joking. And it opened on the 21. And they had one WTF opening in Alien vs Predator: The Requiem. But this year?
VALKYRIE the feel good movie about people plotting to kill Hilter. What cracks me up is they're saying it opens on "December 25" and not "Christmas" as most movies do, which leads me to suspect they're sort of aiming to court Jews and other non-Christians. Maybe not, but... WTF is up with that date?
The Spirit, the feel good, presumably dark comic book movie of the year. Okay, they could be doing Watchmen. And maybe this movie isn't as dark/violent as "V for Vendetta" or "Sin City", but they might as well rerelease "Dark Knight", too, just for the kick in the gut.
The others look like mostly standard holiday fare. "Revolutionary Road", a depressing movie about suburbia, probably ending up in morosness and sadness. "Benjamin Button", an uplifting tale of a guy who grows younger. "Marley and Me", which my mom doesn't want to see on X-Mas because of, well, me (she read the end of the book, like I couldn't tell how it was going to end). And "Bedtime Stories" or "The Movie I Will Only Watch if a Kid Brings it to School".
So, yeah. Those are the holiday movie choices. We'll probably be seeing "Bolt".
