Tip when answering feedback
Jan. 10th, 2003 11:15 amMy tip for responding to feedback is to not insult the intelligence of your readers. It seems pretty elementary to me. After all, the people reading your fic have probably read other fics too. And sometimes, they even write it, so they know what makes a good fic (not always, but sometimes). So, when I send a piece of feedback saying: "I couldn't figure out what Lex was feeling the whole time. I was afraid he wasn't going to be able to give Clark what he needed emotionally and then, at the end, everything fell together. The emotional payoff was there. It was great," please assume that this is merely me pointing out what I liked about the fic.
Don't tell me, "Don't take this the wrong way, but it's great to hear you were worried about Lex. < g > See, *I* knew how he felt. Clark didn't, but I did, and I couldn't really tell how Lex was coming off. I wanted him to seem sort of vague and non-committal, and it looks like it worked!" Because, guess what: you didn't invent this technique. I got it; I understood that this is what you were doing. I'm not a total fucking moron. And I don't understand what 'don't take this the wrong way' means. I understood the intention to begin with, and I told you it was effective because I *wanted* you to feel good about your writing. That's why I brought it up in the first place.
So, to sum up: Don't insult your readers by thinking that you're some sort of God. I'm not a moron. And yes, I *do* want to read 'Forrest Gump' slash, thank you very much. *grin*
