January: Y'all know that song "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift?
February: I'm in a bad fucking mood.
March: I've had a cramp in my calf for over a week.
April: I guess the first is I'm giving up spelling.
May: Stop stealing from Star Trek. 'k? (Directed towards Moffat)
June: I'm trying to decide if I should call the ortho-dentist and find out a good time to go down (35 miles to the middle of nowhere) or just drive down there and spend my day in their waiting room
July: "You gonna tell Mom and Dad?" Nathan asked.
August:
Sometimes, I feel like the only way I can get some rest is to wake up from night sleep, when the most exhausting of my dreams happen, putter around a bit, then take a nap to get some actual rest.
September: Jackie Earle Haley has a big head.
October: The cats had an appointment today at the vet to get booster shots.
November: So, the check engine light has been on in my car for a month.
December: I've said this before, but I hate how any online conversation about Barbies turns into, "Oh, I never played with Barbies. I was too busy [fill in the blank with appropriate, often traditionally 'masculine' activity]."
To sum up: I spent a lot of this year angry, in pain, sick, or contemplating Jackie Earle Haley's big head.
I'm not sure if I acutally wrote enough fic this year, but I'll give this a go.
List all the fics you wrote this year, and the word count.
Chapter 2 (3,486 words): My SWAT/Chuck crossover. Keep meaning to go back to this.
Ships in the Night (69,865): Watchmen
Phantom of the (rock) Opera (4,176): Smallville
The Accidental Drag Queen and the Undercover Detective (23,813): Batman
Lethe (43,569) SPN
Bitter Seed (36,022 and counting): SPN
Christmas Elf (1,355): Batman
Total:
stories 7 (some were WIPs from other years, but they were finished this year, so...)
words 138,718
Overall Thoughts:
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
I wrote more than I thought I did. I'm never sure how much fic I'm going to write in a year, partly because I don't know what's going to happen with work/original writing. I'm not as actively involved in fandoms anymore. I've always been more prolific when writing slash, but I've only ever written OFC fic in the fandom I'm most into right now (Supernatural).
I did think I was going to get back to my Life on Mars fic this year, and I didn't, so that was surprising.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
I never thought I'd write a Batman fic. I used to not even like Cillian Murphy, but he's really grown on me. I think that, had I not read Lauralot's Jonathan Crane series, I wouldn't have written my own, but they were good and really got me inspired to write.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I think Bitter Seed. There are, from what I can tell, 3 people reading it, but I'm having so much fun writing it. I really love it.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Not that I know of. Well; I wrote Ships in the Night in present tense. It's very hard for me to get to the emotional core in present tense, but the more I wrote, the better I got.
From my past year of writing, what was...
My best story of this year:
The Accidental Drag Queen and the Undercover Detective
My most popular story of this year:
Accidental Drag Queen. I mean, it's the Scarecrow in drag.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Bitter Seed. I mean, it may be self-indulgent mary sue fic, but I think it's good.
Most fun story to write:
I guess Bitter Seed, although Accidental Drag Queen is quite fun, too.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
I've got two
Bruce kissing the hollow of Jonathan's throat, just under the mistletoe choker in Christmas Elf
Rachel and Dean dancing in the rain then having sex in the car in Lethe
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Don't think I've had that moment.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
???
Hardest story to write:
Chapter 2 is incredibly hard to write because what I'm really doing is original fiction using established characters. I've been wanting so long to write about Jim Streets abusive relationship with Gambol and how he moves on after, and I'm still not sure why I chose Chuck to do that, but it fit.
Ships in the Night comes in second because I needed to keep Rorschach as in character as I could while having him fall in love with a woman. Plus, it was in present tense and Rorschach isn't very communicative even within himself. He feels, I think, but doesn't articulate this thoughts to anyone, even himself. I really struggled with showing him grow and change while not going overboard with the inner monologues.
Biggest Disappointment:
Not continuing/finishing COTW. But, seriously, starting the Phantom of the Opera fic and not getting further.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
I'm going to retype Dark Goddess and fix some of the rough edges that I glossed over. I'm also going to start sending out query's again.
Fanfic goals: Finish Accidental Drag Queen. Go back to Accidentally (LoM fic). Continue with my self-indulgent Supernatural OFC fics because it makes me happy. Maybe write a Tron fic.
That was thought-provoking.
