Amy's Choice

Is the insinuation, both on the show and a few posts from around fandom, that being a nurse is not a real job/career and that Rory necessarily wanted to be a doctor and not a nurse.

Now, if it was framed that he wanted to be a doctor because of the Doctor, I don't think I'd mind it so much. But I felt it came out of nowhere, especially when the Doctor was all, "You're a doctor, just like you always wanted to be."

Why? What was wrong with being a nurse?

I thought that it was implied in the first episode (that he wanted to be like th doctor, for Amy's sake). Amy had Rory play at being "the doctor" when they were little and it looked like being a nurse was just one more way he failed to live up to her memory of her "imaginary friend". Hm, I guess that still suggests being a nurse is like falling short of being a doctor, instead of choosing that path to begin with...
