I really don't get Detox (House). If I go off my anti-depressant meds, I have withdrawal symptoms. I'm probably addicted to them. That doesn't mean I don't need them.

Now, maybe House doesn't need the Vicodin, or at least as much as he was taking. Maybe he should have found another way to manage his pay. However, the fact that he showed withdrawal symptoms when going off the Vicodin doesn't really prove anything.

I don't understand this episode.

I don't really remember Detox that well, but one of the great ambiguities in House is the question of whether or not he is an addict. He certainly takes a lot of Vicodin and he seems to use it as a crutch for emotional as well as physical pain. OTOH, he really does suffer chronic pain, and does need the medication to live any kind of normal life. I've never quite been sure which side I come down on. I tend to think House is an addict who happens to have a really legitimate reason to not quit his drug. I do know that IRL there is no way the hospital could continue to allow him to practice while he takes such high doses of a strong narcotic. The liability issues would just be too great.

In Detox, Cuddy bets House he can't go a week without Vicodin. House says it'll be no problem, because he's not an addict, so he won't experience any withdrawal symptoms. And that seems backwards to me. After taking so much for so long, his body would be defendant on it, wouldn't he? Like, I'm dependent on my anti-depressants and when I go off, I get all screwed up. So I just think the phrasing in the episode was off.

Yeah, I think he's an addict with an excuse. As for the RL concerns... I'm able to suspend my disbelief enough.
