I like the idea that Morgan misses him because he considers Sam family and he's so controlling that he's unlikely to ever let Sam go.

He seemed very controlling of Sam in the show. Like there was more between him and Sam than just DCI and DI. So I'm taking that and extending (and twisting) it a bit. Fun!
